Fuel protesters hope for big turnout

Fuel protesters will make their feelings clear today as they stage a go-slow convoy along the M40 to London.

The protest leaves Oxford Services at junction eight of the motorway, near Wheatley, at 11am.

The cavalcade will cruise at about 40mph in the first and second lanes en route to Marble Arch, before travelling across central London to Downing Street.

The protest, organised by Oxfordshire cabbies Brooke Purvis and Mark Griffith, will then deliver a letter to Prime Minister Gordon Brown urging him to cut the level of fuel duty.

Mr Purvis, from Carterton, said: "I would be happy if there were 20 cars, but I have heard a rumour a lot of trucks could be turning up, and I've heard a bus firm is also turning up.

"I just spoke to the guy we are meeting in London and he said he had 300 vehicles confirmed coming down the M1.

"They are coming down from Manchester and starting their go-slow at South Mimms services before meeting us at Marble Arch."

The 31-year-old said the M40 protest would then join up with other motorists from Scotland, Bristol, Nottingham and Derby.

He added: "I would imagine we will get the message across if everything goes to plan and everyone listens to what we have to say. We must not forget Alistair Darling has already announced, conveniently a few days before our protest, that the Government is not going to impose the 2p tax rise.

"That kind of takes the wind out of our sails, but by doing that they have actually done nothing and they are still raking it in."

Amazing! The people on here windging about higher petrol prices....'the goverment must give us a rebate' as if it's the goverments fault that speculators in the world market have made a fortune off our backs. We cannot attack the speculators so we turn to the obvious target, the goverment. When the public sector workers when on strike last week to try and get a wage rise to try and keep up with rising prices, the same voices were condeming them, calling them all sorts of nasty names. They are tax payers too! So it's one rule when you're hurting and another when it's someone else. Hypocrites!

It's a shame really, there were only 4 cars at the protest. Even "anon" didn't turn up. We still did our go slow but I feel completley embarrassed to have only had 4 cars attend. Espiclly when there are so many people who say that fuel is too high and that something should be done. Please note that petrol at a price of 118.9p a liter has a tax of 57%. The more oil prices rise the more the fuel is taxed, you have your price of fuel then your fuel duty and then VAT on top of that. Duty could be cut by half and the government would still be getting more than they had budgeted for in the the last budget. Also with raised fuel costs everything that relies of fuel to be transported then goes up in price, and lets face it, thats almost everything, ever! then with the raised fuel cost thats being added to your everyday item you have you VAT added to that as well and therfore you are paying a larger amount of tax on evrything else as well as compensating the company for their higher fuel cost! I would imagine by our turn out that most people are happy to pay massivley inflated prices for everyday items.

No sadder than some literlist cretin who can't spot irony when it slaps him round the face.

Actually I don't drive, wouldn't want to. As soon as you pass your test everybody on the road becomes a speeding t--t.

i am the wife of one of the few drivers that did attend the go slow today, i was proud to be up there supporting the drivers who work through the night in all weathers. i was very surprized at how many other taxi drivers did not even beep there horn or flash in recognition of what we stood for today. however if we had succeded in completing our task and did manage to make a diference then would they still ignore? maybe a thought should be given to those with guts and courage today who did try to make a difference. nice one brooke maybe next time - just let us know when and where and were right behind you

Four people going slow on a motorway is hardly likely to attract attention.

Gordon Brown has announced £30m (38m euros; $60m) of additional financial support for the Palestinian Authority (PA), on a visit to the West bank

Dont help when the idiot in charge gives all of OUR money away to other poxy countries. Thats why we pay so much. Time for a revolution I think.

I’m sure there was a go slow on this morning in the City. Every fool boot to bonnet crawling through the city, blocking the streets for everyone wanting to take the bus, or cycle in.

I think the pedestrians have got your point by now. You've pumped enough carbon monoxide into their lungs already!

Lower motorway speed limits by 20 mph then the 2p duty rise will not be noticed.

The overall tax burden as a proportion of fuel is less now than both 1980 and 1990.
