Knife seizure shocks police

Pc Matthew Hoggetts holds the double-bladed knife seized in Oxford

Police have described a knife which was being carried by a teenager as he walked along an Oxford street as one of the "most horrendous" they had ever seen.

The skull-encrusted knife - with two 5in blades - was found when officers stopped and searched a 17-year-old youth in Blackbird Leys.

Police yesterday said they would charge anyone found in possession of a knife after the Oxford Mail revealed half of those caught with the weapons escape prosecution.

It came as the country mourns the deaths of 12 young people in stabbings in just seven days, with the Government promising tougher action on blade-wielding thugs.

Det Sgt Paul Kingsley, of Oxford CID, described the knife, as a Klingon fighting weapon - used in the Star Trek films - which can only be bought on the internet.

He said: "It was the most horrendous knife we have ever seen. In the 22 years I have been in the force, I have never seen something like this.

"We wouldn't like to suggest the majority of youths are carrying knives, because they're not.

"But the odd one or two do, and if they're caught, they will be made to explain why in court.

"This knife is particularly nasty. When you look at it, you realise there's no lawful reason for anyone to be in possession of it.

"We will be charging people caught in possession of knives like this. There's no excuse I can think of for going on the streets with this kind of knife."

The weapon unfolds to reveal two blades.

It was seized from the teenager on Wednesday, July 2, in Cuddesdon Way, Blackbird Leys, at 9.20am.

He was charged with possession of a blade article and handed a six month youth offender referral at Oxford Youth Court last Wednesday.

It means the youngster is put in the care of the county council's youth offending service and given a programme of good behaviour to follow.

Last week, the Oxford Mail revealed only 11 of the 22 people found carrying a knife in Oxford during April and May were charged. The rest were given a caution or released without charge.

Reported knife crime in Oxfordshire fell from 125 incidents in 2006-7 to 105 in 2007-8.

In the past 12 months, knives have been used in the killing of ex-soldier Stephen Pinker, 42, in Cowley, and attacks on Roy Sinclair, 49, in Blackbird Leys, and Simon Pratley, 27, in Greater Leys.

Between Monday, July 7, and Sunday, July 13, 12 people across England were stabbed to death.

The Government is proposing new legislation aimed at tackling the number of youths on the streets carrying blades.

Tiger Lily, in New Road, Oxford, sells knives and swords and has a strict over-18 sales policy.

Its owner said: "Sometimes we get children under 18 trying it on - but we always say no."

Or at the Kassam stadium on any given Sunday.

5yrs should be mandatory for carrying a blade and 10 for a gun - simple.

The gov is too soft

I think the fact you used the words "virgin nerd" indicates that you're probably not far off.

At the risk of sounding an even bigger nerd, of course this is not a Klingon weapon at all - their "Bet'leh" is a massive weapon - at least three feet across, and not something for the palm of one's hand....:)

There's even an entire, rather sad, website devoted to these fictitious creations:

Here is a radical lefty solution - rather than try showing him a knife crime victim or some other pansy way, chain him up and let the police stab him with his own knife as many times as it takes to drive home the message into his thick skull, if he then dies so be it.

I can't be the only one totally sick of how powerless the law has become, and how the PC brigade have allowed criminals to have any kind of rights.

Shocking.

We all know who'd be in bother if the young thug fell on the knife whilst an unarmed person was defending themselves from him...

Can't understand why Tiger lilly would sell knives anyway, just because i'm over 18 doesn't mean I'm going to use my discretion and think twice about shankin someone. Vigilante law rules ..you cut someone , you get cut back , then see if the fool would do it again. Standard !

Yes it looks like a very nasty piece of kit, but the knife is nothing without a carrier that is willing to use it, and with that it wouldn't matter if he carried a vegetable knife or a machete, if used the outcome would still be the same.
We should not have people young & old carring a weapon of any kind, this is becoming a strange world where we fear everything & just like America all the media report on are the bad things as that sells papers. Its time to stop F***ing around & start taking control & a grip before it is all too late. Fear Breeds Fear, panic & chaos. Trends always start in London & then move out to the cities is this the future to come? Young Wesley on central news each night telling the county about somebody's son or daughter that has been diced, a few more a week & he will be nearly there.

As for doctors showing the results of knife crime for shock tactics to users or carriers, half the nation watch several different programmes on emergency work in the uk, has it made a difference? I don't know, but if they are selling tickets I would love to tag along & watch, I might learn something incase I am ever attacked!!!!

A very mad world indeed.

In the spirit of Prince Philip it's caption time.

For Charles,'Do you often lay down on the job?'

Walked past Tiger Lily at lunchtime.

They've got that exact knife in the window for £15...

I think we know where it was bought...

I'm guessing United Cutlery,an US brand representing far easter manufacturing.

Fantasy knives, movie and tv memorabilia as well as throwing knives.

Not quite Stihl or De Walt.

In the Series Andromeda they used a few knives strangely similar to Boker's imported Magnum brand.

Will the Police sit outside the Sci-Fi fests waiting to trouser movie memorabila, perhaps shoot to kill a Spock or Picard for carrying a phaser?

I wonder...

When 'the troubles' were still televised did they arrest for possession of Black and Decker?

Ack,the flower of ignorants destroyed.

Ignorance is not a virtue.

Maybe the floats can return and Patrick Stewart can project the immortal line,'Take the kiswa maker hook of our sietch and ride as a leader of men.'

it makes me laugh. people down in oxford are ALL mouth no action and carry weapons like these because they THINK they are dangerous. try coming to manchester worse looking guns are found every day, not to mention the amount of times they get used in a week. i lived in oxford for a year and heard nothing but stories about children thinking they live in a ghetto and are gangsters. If them kids came up here they would be running back to oxford screaming for their mums.

This is why I fear for the future of this country.

All the information available to you, stuey and you still miss the point, you can't see past your pathetic pseudo-macho ego.

Some of us have evolved past the ape-like mentality that physical violence is the path to respect.
