Boris is new mayor

UPDATE: Boris Johnson has been elected Mayor of London.

The Conservative candidate seized City Hall from Labour's two-term incumbent Ken Livingstone with Liberal Democrat Brian Paddick in third place.

Mr Johnson polled 1,168,738 votes to Mr Livingstone's 1,028,966. After second preferences were allocated, Mr Johnson achieved around 53% to Mr Livingstone's 47%.

The result heaped further pressure on Prime Minister Gordon Brown after his party plunged to its worst council election results in four decades.

Mr Johnson is the first Conservative mayor since the post was created and comes in on a wave of record voting numbers.

Conservative leader David Cameron was among the first to congratulate Mr Johnson.

Mr Cameron hailed a "serious and energetic" campaign and "remarkable" victory.

Great. Another party-political person in charge. Independants are the real way forward - no party line to tow, and no whips either.

We'll see if Boris cares as much about London has he did about Henley.....whilst adding a few million more to his bank balance..

Labour's great mistake was to woo the inbred degenerates of middle england by keeping lots of Tory policies and turning its back on its core voters.

Now we see the bourgeois reverting to type and going back to their traditional voting patterns.

Perhaps now labour will review its policies now the fair weather management consultants who thought they had discovered some new money making scheme have departed again.

Boris has won because of his promise to abolish congestion charges, that is the only reason.

I am glad he's got the job though, should be very entertaining to see him tour places like Brixton. Wasnt it he who referred to "Picanninnies" a while back?

Could be even better entertainment than the Duke of Edinburgh.

I have some Verse.

Mohamed was a Moslem

Terrorism was his trade

Wherever he and Islam went the Jews were sure to be afraid

You see the Jews attacked the Moslem and the Moslems fought right back

All they have in common is their loathing of the Blacks.

Crypto Boris is revealed.

Yet another example of someone who doesn't have any experience of what he is talking about. Boris has been the best MP Henley has ever had. Just ask people who actually live there

And yet 13 million Londoners do not want anything to do with your bloody Boris.

13 million,count 'em,said either no thanks or sod-off.

I am blue with Pride, new generation here and labour has done nothing but ruin country sports and haven't given a monkeys about country life and farmers, put tax up so high on everything people can afford naff all, brought a smoking ban which stopped peoples rights, and let in so many people from abroad our own kids have no chance on the house market and done nothing their own people. Come one the Blues save this sorry sad country and give us English/British pride back and not be afraid to fly the flag

no offence, but London E3/E9/SW2/N2/etc/etc have more in common with Mars than Henley (as does large parts of Oxford, to be fair).

This was a clever campaign that garnered votes from places barely within the Metropolitan area, largely without London postcodes, which were bolstered by the appalling turn-out in many inner boroughs.

We'll see how this works, but if you actually believe transport got worse not better under Ken, you don't live in London, and the abandonment of 50% affordable housing quotas is moronic at a time when cities like Sydney and Paris are despeately trying to catch up with London's affordable housing policies.

As for that chap above going on about country life - WFT mate? How is that relevant to the London Mayoral election? I also wouldnt be so sure the Tories give a stuff about their own people - they look after their own, as do New Labour.

All those "lovely watermelon smiles" awaiting him in Brixton.

I can hardly control my mirth already.

What a relief it must be for Blair to get out of England. It is said the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth, partly because it supplies her with regular cheering crowds of flag waving piccaninnies; and one can imagine that Blair, twice victor abroad but enmired at home, is similarly seduced by foreign politeness.

They say he is going to the Congo. No doubt the AK47s will fall silent, and the pangas will stop the hacking of human flesh, and the tribal warriors will all break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down in his big white taxpayer-funded bird.

Does Boris live in Henley then?

I thought London was where he spent much of his time.

Learn something new everyday.

Yes he does live part of the time in Henley and is often seen in the town. Also a very approachable man unlike some politicians.

That's the way the system works Mr Ison. No use complaining about it once it's done and dusted, just because you didn't like the outcome.

Over 50% of Londoners couldn't be bothered to vote and so they got what they deserve. They didn't say "no thanks" or even "sod off", as a matter of fact their apathy meant that they said nothing at all.

You failed logical analysis.

Whatever it is they are doing it's not the London way.

Can be extrapolated nationally perhaps?
