Patto waiting for departures
Darren Patterson is still striving to improve his Oxford United squad for the final few weeks of this season.
But he needs players to move out before he can get anyone else in, and two of his transfer-listed trio rejected possible moves last week.
Although the U's boss cannot force an out-of-favour player to join another club, he believes some get so stuck in the "comfort zone" where they are, they don't think appreciate getting regular first-team football might benefit them, and that being in the shop window might enhance their career prospects.
Carl Pettefer, Eddie Hutchinson, Matt Day and Yemi Odubade are all on the transfer list, and only Day - who Patterson has praised in recent weeks - was the only one included in the 16-man squad that won 1-0 at Stafford last Saturday.
Patterson said: "Two people refused moves last week, and that's all I can say.
"I'm impatient, I want to do things now, I want to improve my squad.
"Although you can only have five players on the bench - and five loan signings in the squad - that doesn't stop me dropping one of them, and they're all short-term deals. It's about competition, and doing better.
"I would like to still improve just to make sure we finish the season on a high, especially going forward and scoring goals, and in wide areas, but I can't do anything unless people go out.
"So I've got a short space of time in which that can happen.
"And if not, we'll just go with what we've got, and we include the younger players a lot more until the end of the season."
Patterson conceded he couldn't force players under contract to go out, even if another club came in for them.
He said: "People are sat in comfort zones and are happy doing what they're doing.
"I've just got to treat them respectfully, which is what I do. I've got a great relationship with every one of the boys, and the rest is down to them."
Pictured are (from top) Eddie Hutchinson, Carl Pettefer and Yemi Odubade.
Oxford United are reminding fans that they can book tickets online for Monday's game against Stevenage Borough (3).
Despite the club's ticket office being closed on Good Friday, Easter Saturday or Easter Sunday, tickets can be bought by going to the official website and following the tickets link.

'Some people are in comfort zones':'all I can do is treat people respectfully.' This is what is known as a contradiction. Ever wondered why players are not producing better performances?...

how in any way is that a contradiction??
to treat someone with respect is the least anyone deserves. He is not saying that he is being friendly with them, all he is saying is that he is open and honest about their position at the club and their performances.
Being disrespectful to them would be like me saying you're an idiot (which of course I would never do).
You're drawing conclusions out of something that does not exist seemingly just to have a moan on this site....

I still can't believe Yemi is one of the highest wage earners... Patto is having to deal with previous management errors. This is a guy we plucked out of the lower leagues (yes there are leagues lower than where we are now!), part-time van driver gave him his dream chance and yet he instantly becomes one of Oxfords highest paid full-timers???! Who signed that one?!

It's about the most respectful way I can conceive of saying that there are some squad members who're happy to take a good wage for doing nowt.
Which, if you'd pull your head out of your backside for a minute and take a good look at the squad, is exactly what's happening.
Your post, sir, is a nonsense.

Whatever you believe, we are in the mess we are down to patterson. He should win games, yet we are lingering a few places outside of the relegation zone. Don't let him keep pulling the wool over your eyes people please, just look at the facts and his record.

I think Patterson is trying to sort out a bunch of players who's confidence was shot to pieces when he took over. I feel dear Jim had lost the plot and Patterson is trying hard to sort out the damage. I think that if another manager had taken over instead of Patterson, then they would be having the nightmare job he is having.
But, still, why not just sack him and start all over again. Thats what we love doing, isn't it!?! It has really worked in the past.

The fact they would rather sit around and earn a wage for nothing, instead of playing regular football says a lot about them. How do people like Hutch and Pettefer expect to get another club? People can blame Patterson, but the fact we have such workshy players, on high wages isn't Patto's fault. Hes done a good job to ship as many of them out as he has. Can't wait until the summer when Patto can clear out the remaining rubbish and sign some players who care more about football than the money they will earn.

there is a culture of lazieness and un-professionalism at the Club and it has gone on too long. The players are an utter disgrace if they are happy to stay and pick up money for nothing, this has been the case for years though and by looking at the number of ex-players in the Football League shining for other teams it is easy to realise something has gone very wrong for the Club

Previous comments attacking Patterson about mutual respect and getting on with the players is rubbish. If he had no respect for these players then they would be training with the youth team and excluded from anything involving the first team squad. He has been just in his comments and action.

I have been as vocal as anyone in my criticism of Patterson before nowq, but, to give credit where its due, I think his comments in this article are highly revealing, and suggest to me that he IS worthy of his job, and IS prepared to deal with the major issues - most of which are the result of Jim and Merry's dealings. As DP says, it isnt as simple as just kicking players out - they have contracts that have to be honoured - irrespective of how good / bad / lazy / greedy the recipients are - they are legally bound. At least he recognises the problem, and has started to deal with it. Yes, it will take time, but im sure all genuine fans would rather watch people of (possibly) lesser ability - although thats unlikely given some of the current mob! - but total commitment to the cause, initially, and their rewards would come with success. OUFC is still the biggest club by far in the BSPL, and is bigger than many in Div 2 of the league.... we will still attract decent players, who are hungry to learn and play football, rather than greedy, over puffed, lazy money grabbers - many of whom will find that its a very cold world outside, once their contracts here run out.
Time to give the guy the support he needs me thinks, and see what things look like this time next year, once he's gotten rid of the dead wood.
