Yemi is frozen out by United
Yemi Odubade
Yemi Odubade

Yemi Odubade may have played his last game for Oxford United.

Last year's supporters' player-of-the-year was left out of the 16-man squad that won 1-0 at Stafford Rangers on Saturday after being transfer-listed by boss Darren Patterson.

And Patterson says it would be better for all concerned if Odubade found another club - not least because, as one of United's highest wage-earners, he could probably get two players in to replace the former Eastbourne Borough striker.

But if the 23-year-old, who signed a new two-year contract with Oxford last summer, isn't snapped up, maybe it will give him a "kick up the backside" to get back into the team, says the boss.

Speaking after the U's victory at Marston Road, Patterson said: "The confidence has gone with Yemi, but I'm a big believer that you make your own confidence.

"You can say your confidence is low, but that's a cop-out.

"I've got a good relationship with the boy, and I think the best thing for him and us is that we go our separate ways.

"Financially as well, I think people should know he's drawing a massive amount of my budget, and obviously he's here next year.

"I need to look at it every way. If he goes, I might be able to get some more bodies in from now until the end of the season to hopefully improve us.

"I need to get people in and, in all fairness, I've got to look at the bigger earners here."

It's not necessarily the end for Odubade.

The way Matt Day has bounced back after he was placed on the transfer list shows that the door doesn't necessarily close completely.

"We're trying to help Matty with a lot of things on the physical side, but he's responded very well, and that's what we're after," said Patterson.

"If Yemi doesn't go, maybe that gives him the kick up the backside and he comes back into the team."

UNITED youngsters Ben Weedon and Matty Taylor have joined Cirencester Town on work experience to gain match practice.

The areas in Yemi's game that need to be developed have always been obvious. What's the point of paying someone as a 'coach' and then failing to support players in improving. The only solution ever considered is to go out and get another player.

....looks like there's support for players here, doesn't it?

It seems clear - if a player's keen to improve, learn and fight for a place (like Day), then the support's there for them. If not, then they can (quite rightly) start looking for another club.

Seems absolutely fine to me.

Yes, but we cannot keep paying £1900 a week to someone that has little skill, football awareness, or self motivation.

I can't believe that we have been playing Yemi so much! In my opinion he has never looked like one of our key player and to be paying him that much seems unreal.

I can kind of understand how Hutchinson got that much money as he was at a league one club prior to Oxford...

Just goes to show how many fronts Patto is having to work on....

Well we may have to if he is on this type of wage!!!!!! (at least for another season)

I still think Yemi would still come good but as Patto says, wages at this level, if too high, are a problem.

Yems is a good player, if he leaves then we will regret it, he is our leading top scorer in this campaign. If i were the boss i would keep him. Yems has something and that is speed, don't forget that some of the players we've got are on loan.

I agree with Rosie Dodds. The fact that Aldershot and Brentford have shown an interest speaks of Yemi's potential. He's goign to do very well for another team. he probably won' t play against us because he's in a league above.

Moreover Patterson' remarks are incredibly contradictory. Yemi's "played his last game but he can "fight his way back in to the team". he has a good relationship with Patterson but Patterson thinks he should go. Make your mind up. Or be honest

The only reason he's going is £££. Our club is in terrible trouble.

If Yemi goes to a League club I will bare my arse whilst riding the Ox statue. He has nothing apart from pace - it is clear this season that Conference level defenders have sussed him. He has no intelligence or awareness on a footy pitch - you only have to speak to some of the other players to know how frustrated they get with him.

Theses players that sit on huge salries and fail to perform are a disgrace to the club and should bve released asap - the fact that they have huge salaries paid for by the fans who are on a pittance compared to the players, and are happy to sit on the bench shows they have absolutley no respect for the fans and have little respect for where the money to pay for their slaries actually comes from

GET RID NOW they clearly dont comprehend how the world works and just believe that the club has an endless amount of money

they fail to realise they are, by underperforming, insulting the very people that pay their wages - the hardworking fans!

what a waste of pottential

sell all the players and start again ,oh sorry that is what is happing,The management at this club is in dire straits ,The way its going it will be 10 years if we are lucky to turn this club round ,too many debts and bad management..

Payment of players is a double edged sword. You can not always attract so called quality higher level players without spending that bit more. On the other hand they should have a greater responsibility to prove themselves and improve the team. Perhaps performance related pay (goals/matches/assis
ts etc) should be used on a grander scale.

Another glimpse into the monumental dung-hill that is the task that Patterson has taken on.

And another fine example of how he has firstly surveyed it and is now rolling up his sleeves and getting stuck in to the job of clearing it.
Champions neaxt year; smells promising...

Maybe that has been where we went wrong with Yemi, we should have put a six pack of beer in the apposing goal, and he would have been right in there.

Neil Grayson plays for part timers Stafford Rangers, he's 42 played the same amount of games as Odubade and scored one more goal in a worse team. He has to coach the team too, clear off Yemi.
