Prince Charles will be in Oxford next week for the annual conference of the Prayer Book Society (PBS).

The Prince of Wales is the patron of the PBS, and will be in the city for the start of the three-day conference on Friday.

He will address the conference during an evening reception at Lady Margaret Hall.

Speakers include The Rt Rev Anthony Burton, Bishop of Saskatchewan, Canada, as well as and other Anglican leaders.

The PBS promotes and preserves the use of the Book of Common Prayer (1662) - the traditional service book of the Church of England.

It aims to ensure the book will be available to future generations, introducing it to trainee vicars and churches through the country.

A spokesman said: "The issues of martyrdom and faith remain as topical now as ever.

"At this time when faith is so often seen and misused as a catalyst for violence and fear, it is particularly important for the Prayer Book Society that the messages of faith, hope and love, which form the bedrock of Cranmer's Book of Common Prayer, continue to be endorsed and promoted with Royal assent."

The PBS conference marks the 450th anniversary of the martyrdom of Thomas Cranmer in Broad Street, Oxford. Bishops Latimer and Ridley were burnt at the stake the year before.

It is the second major Christian event in the city held this year to mark the anniversary. In June different denominations joined forces for a joint 'Love Oxford' celebration near the Martyrs' Memorial, which aimed to bring Christians together.
