Five of the 26 detainees who escaped from the Campsfield House immigration detention centre, near Kidlington, a year ago are still on the run.

They escaped a year ago today after fires broke out in the kitchen and an accommodation block.

The UK Border Agency said today it had recaptured one detainee last Friday but it had no idea of the whereabouts of the remaining five.

The Oxford Mail also learnt that three of the seven detainees who escaped following a riot in June this year were still on the loose.

The agency refused to reveal the identity of the man arrested last week or confirm whether he had been returned to Campsfield to await deportation.

A spokesman added: "We are constantly reviewing all the intelligence to prioritise our work and to assess any risk to the public.

"Those who remain at large are not considered to be a danger to the public. We are continuing to work with the police to pursue the remainder."

Charles Hunnisett, 35, who lives in nearby Evenlode Crescent, said security at the centre still worried residents.

He added: "It doesn't surprise me that they have haven't been caught. It seems like they just don't know how to handle the inmates. I think they should be moved to a more secure area.

"Everyone is worried there are going to be more break-outs."
