Train services between Didcot Parkway, Swindon, Bristol Parkway and South Wales will be disrupted for several days after a landslip blocked the tracks at Chipping Sodbury today.
Work is under way to clear the line and to stabilise the ground alongside the railway before track repairs start.
First Great Western said it plans to operate a near-normal peak frequency this evening but diversions via alternative routes will mean journey times are extended.
Services to Bath and Bristol Temple Meads are not affected.
FGW and Network Rail hope a limited direct service will resume tomorrow but journey times will still be extended, and some services are likely to be diverted.
