ROWING: Mighty Mattick makes history
Paul Mattick, of Wallingford, made history in the final World Cup regatta in Lucerne.
Mattick (pictured) was the No 3 man in the British lightweight coxless four which won gold - their first since the World Cup started ten years ago.
Mattick and his crewmates, who included Richard Chambers, of Oxford Brookes, won in convincing fashion.
Their success follows bronze and silver places in the first two World Cup regattas.
"We had a nice, long, relaxed rhythm," said Mattick. "We had it under control."
Frances Houghton, from Wheatley, was also in a World Cup-winning class boat, the women's quad scull.
History was also made as Britain emerged overall winners of the World Cup team event for the first time.
With points awarded for crews finishing in the top seven places in the boat classes, several locals helped in achieveing the historic win.
Katie Greves, formerly of Headington School, and Caroline O'Connor, now at Brookes, were in the fourth-placed women's eight, while Oxford University's Tom Parker and old Blue Acer Nethercott were in the fourth-placed men's eight.
Peter Reed and Andy Hodge, former winning Dark Blues, was second in the men's coxless fours, while Wallingford perennial Helen Casey was fifth in the women's lightweight double.
