Sports lovers are demanding action to remove graffiti from their 'eyesore' pavilion.

Although Oxford City Council pledged to remove all graffiti from the building in Quarry Park, Margaret Road, Headington, two months ago, most of it is still there.

Council staff visited the site and removed offensive graffiti from a door - but left the majority of the graffiti behind. And frustration is growing as the local football team, Quarry Nomads, prepare for the next season.

Keith Dolton, 68, who helps run the club, said: "It annoys me as I've told the council it's still there. I've lived in Quarry all my life - I even helped to build the pavilion when I was younger.

"It upsets me to see it like that and I don't want to see it fall into disrepair. I offered to pebbledash it myself if the council provided the materials, as I thought that would make it harder to graffiti."

Quarry and Risinghurst councillor Tia MacGregor has launched an appeal to find funds to give the pavilion a much needed facelift.

Dr MacGregor said: "It really is a shame that this pavilion has been allowed to get like this. It's a really poor reflection on the area when teams from around the country travel here and see this.

"Right next to the pavilion there is a fantastic new children's playground and then you see this next to it.

"The inside of the building is in good condition, we just need to improve the outside."

Margaret Road resident Lesley Hill believes the building needs to be knocked down and replaced with new facilities.

She said: "It's just so ugly and no matter how much you clean it up, it won't change anything. If kids want to graffiti on it, they will, and then you are back to square one."

The city council has now said it will need specialist equipment from the City Works department to remove the remaining graffiti from the building. A spokesman said: "This should be completed next week."
