Old Friends are the Best Friends
Some Oxford Youth Theatre members from the 1960s to the present day
Some Oxford Youth Theatre members from the 1960s to the present day

We are now well into the New Year and I'm not one to make resolutions but I'm really looking forward to the coming year. However the prospect comes with a mixture of pleasure and sadness when thinking of friends and colleagues who have been affected by the Arts Council funding cuts. As you will know from my previous musings here, arts organisations live a precarious existence due to out reliance on public subsidy.

On to happier things - the good news! I'd like to say thanks to everyone who has sent good wishes on hearing about my award from the New Year's Honours list. I can't respond to so many personally so I'd like to use this space to say how much I really appreciate their thoughts.

More good news! How wonderful that so many people, spanning decades, turned up to the Grand Oxford Youth Theatre Reunion last Saturday. One former member told me "Coming back has really made me realise that being part of Pegasus and OYT were the happiest memories of my life". I have to say this thought was echoed by everyone there from the youngest in their 20s to the oldest in their 70s.

Coming back has really made me realise that being part of Pegasus and OYT were the happiest memories of my life.

Lots of friendships were rekindles and made. A big thank you to everyone for coming along and making such a wonderful memorable evening.

Earlier this week I attended another prestigious event - the premiere of the Oxford film Lady Godiva. I'm not used to the red carpet treatment so when I turned up at the Odeon in Magdalen Street on Tuesday and saw the road closed, the cinema entrance cordoned off, photographers and cameramen searching the crowds for a famous face (not mine obviously) I felt very impressed. I can't quite see the day when Pegasus might lay out the Axminster on the pavement - but if we manage our fundraising coup (£1.7 million by April 2009) then I might change my mind.
