Victorious football teams are named

Roger Beesley has supplied the names of all but two of the all-conquering Gosford Hill School football teams (Memory Lane, January 14).

In the 1957-8 season, the Under-15s and Under-13s from the Kidlington school set a record which still stands.

Both ended victorious in their Oxford Schools' Football Association competitions - the first and only time any school achieved a double.

Mr Beesley, of Oak Drive, Kidlington, also has a cutting of the Oxford Mail report of the Under-15s' triumph, written by my former colleague, John Parsons.

He wrote: "Gosford Hill added to their success in the Intermediate Cup with a 3-2 victory over Cheney in the final of the Oxford Schools Football Association's Senior Shield on the White House ground.

"This was the first time Gosford had won the shield, and their victory over Cheney - winners last year - gave them ample revenge for their defeat by Cheney in another competition earlier in the season."

The game didn't start too well for Gosford as they fell behind after eight minutes from a goal by Jessemey.

But they equalised through Beesley two minutes later and O'Malley gave them the lead after 22 minutes.

Just after the interval, O'Malley put Gosford into a 3-1 lead, but, with seven minutes left, Jessemey struck again, and despite pressure from Cheney, they couldn't equalise and Gosford won.

The players in the two pictures were: Under 15s, back row, left to right: E Moss, B Groves, J Knibbs, H Mann, G Lyne, R Evans, I Smith (sportsmaster); front row, B Swann, A Giles, R Beesley, K Fagan, G O'Malley.

Under 13s, back row, left to right: ?, D James, J Knibbs, R Evans, ?, M Openshaw. Front row, R King, B Swann, A Giles, T Brennan, K Deeley.

The Under-15 goalkeeper, McPherson, left school before the photogaph was taken.

Can anyone recall the names of the two missing players?
