News article from Debt Help UK
In recent times going bankrupt has been seen as the ultimate humiliation, and those people affected feared they'd never lead a normal life again.
Today, someone goes bankrupt every three minutes of each working day in the UK, as Britons borrow an astonishing £1 million every four minutes, and bankruptcy is fast-becoming the preferred route out of a financial crisis.
In 2006, over 100,000 people went bankrupt or took an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) to pay off debt, a figure that has quadrupled in the past 10 years. Over 53% of the people who seek help with debts of between £20,000 and £150,000 are women.
The Citizens' Advice Bureau has announced that 1.7 million people sought debt counselling last year, up 20 % from the previous year.
Iain Wrenshall, Director at Manchester based Debt Help UK says: "Statistics taken
from our website mirror the CAB's findings, with a 30 % increase in requests for
advice on debt and a 60 % increase in cases where bankruptcy was recommended as
the best option.
"The increase comes as a direct result of five interest rate rises in the last
18 months. This has meant that mortgage payments have increased significantly,
without a corresponding rise in salaries. This is putting a real strain on disposable
incomes, so there is less money available to pay for existing debts. "In fact
the CAB statistics do not take into account interest rate hikes since March so
the real outlook on the UK's need for debt counselling may be even bleaker and
it is an area that needs to be addressed by individuals and lenders alike."
"People are often unaware of which debts to prioritise, and we have seen a worrying
number of people who decide to keep up repayments on credit cards, store cards
and loans rather than on mortgages, council tax and utility bills."
"Those struggling with unmanageable debt tend to be unaware of the debt solutions
available to help them. For example, in the correct circumstances, creditors may
agree to accept Individual Voluntary Arrangements, or IVAs, which can allow you
to write off debt over a shorter period of time, and where creditors agree to
accept lower repayments, as an alternative to bankruptcy."
"If you feel overwhelmed, it is vital to seek advice sooner rather than later.
Ignoring significant debt is no help, and will only exacerbate the problem."
